The International Society of Typographic Designers challenged young designers to discover odd corners of their local library and create an experimental typographic book based on what they found. They asked that respondents convert their date of birth to a dewey decimal number to discover their “fated book”. My date of birth lead to a cracker: “Popular Occultism in Late Imperial Russia”.

This book provided no shortage of inspiration for opulent, gilded, warped, deceptive, spooky, surprising typography-led design. Layers of semi transparent, reflective, textured or heavy dark paper stocks added to the tactile experience of the book.

The cover of the book is screen printed with thermodynamic ink which briefly reveals the touch of the reader before fading back to black.
